New Four Way Stop

The Town of Wolfville wishes to advise residents of the installation of a new four way stop at the intersection of Main Street, Gaspereau Avenue, and Harbourside Drive.  The four way stop is on a trial basis and will be reviewed after a four to six month period.  This stop will be in effect on Friday, May 22, 2009.

I was not a fan of the 4 way stop when it was first introduced, but have noticed that it has been really helpful. Most people seem to have gotten used to it and I personally feel more confident at that intersection now (I was almost hit twice before it was installed by people who had grown impatient).
I sincerely hope that after its review, council decides to keep it!

Curious why this was installed? Lived in Wolfville a while back and now am a traffic engineer for a city outside the province. Recently came to visit and noticed this.

I think the 4 way is great. especially when you are on gaspereau rd trying to turn left onto main street. it also doing a good job at slowing down traffic which do seem to get faster as they approach that end of main st (going towards grand pre). i enjoy driving downtown even with the traffic, it's part of the charm of an active/vibrant small town (it would obviously be better if more locals chose to walk to their destinations, but that's another topic) ;-)

Based on my experiences over the past month or so, and the number of times I have been cut off at the 4 way stop by people driving through it, I believe that it is a BAD idea. You can forget about getting out of the Post Office Parking lot without s significant wait anytime in the late afternoon because of the traffic backed up to the Al Whittle Theatre. I'd gladly trade a longer wait at the foot of Gaspereau Ave for a traffic light than have to wait out the 4 way stop that is not working.

Did anyone consult the tax payers in the residential areas to the south of Main street whose traffic levels will be going up before implementing this? How about the Wolfville merchants whose business will suffer because of traffic issues? I lived in Kentville when the one way traffic around the block was begun and saw what it did to commercial traffic there. I know many people who avoid Kentville like the plague rather than negotiate the one way streets. Wolfville's new four way stop may have a similar effect.

Like Randy Singleton I too will avoid the downtown core whenever possible.

Well I went through the new stop sign today on main street. I know that this is new and I know what the objective is. My first impression though as I was backed up 15 cars going through the main drag of Wolfville, is that if I am just passing through and have no specific place in Wolfville to go I will just avoid Wolfville. If I have to go somewhere in Wolfville travelling the up through the residential area will be a better route that trying to navigate the increased congestion that will be in the town, which is almost always congested. I do this some now but it will happen more now.
If the eventual plan is to have a set of lights then hurray, 4-way stops have there place but in my opinion that is not in a congested area slowing up through traffic.

I hope it isn't has bad as what I think it will be..

Randy
