Education

The Town Council passed a resolution in June 2007 that initiated a one-year community education program to support pesticide-free approaches for landscape maintenance. The education program began in August 2007 and was officially launched at the EcoFair on October 26th at the Atlantic Theatre Festival. The program was also announced in the Fall 2007 Mayor's Newsletter ("Clearing the air: Community education program for pesticide reduction", p.8).

The Town has retained Gardner Pinfold Consulting, a firm with staff who were involved in the delivery of pesticide bylaw education and inspection programs for the Halifax Regional Municipality. They are preparing information resources and public presentations (PowerPoint presented to Council) that will be delivered over the course of the 2007-2008 year. They will work with citizens and businesses, and will help evaluate the Town's efforts.

The main focus of the program will be on sharing information that helps everyone better understand: the pesticide concerns that are motivating new approaches, the simple things that people can do to avoid pesticides, and basic information for sustainable landscape maintenance. Understanding the history, context, trends, and current developments, will all help the community going forward.

Some basic tips and information sheets are available, these may also be obtained as brochures from the Town office.
