Town of Wolfville Approves 2008-09 Budget

At its regular meeting Tuesday, May 20 Wolfville Town Council approved its operating budget and tax rates for 2008.

The Residential Tax has been set at $1.41, a reduction of 3 cents from last year. This is the fourth consecutive year that the residential tax rate has declined.


The Commercial Rate has been set at $3.41, an increase of 11 cents over last yearÙs rate. The increase in the Commercial rate offsets the further phase out of Business Occupancy Assessments.

For residential property owners whose assessments are capped by the Province, the increase in residential tax over last year will be less than one-quarter of one per cent.

The total operating budget for 2008 will be $7,081,967.00. This represents an increase of 1.68%, the smallest year-to-year increase in many years.

Council further approved a Capital Budget totalling $2,318,881.00. and a Water Utility Budget Expenditures of $1,435,600.00.  Major projects for the coming year include Sherwood Drive Street and Sidewalk reconstruction $989,412.00, Victoria Avenue Recreation Center Renovations $306,373.00 and Recreation Field improvements $100,000.00.

Other projects approved will include a new parking lot off Harbourside Drive  $80,000.00, Marsh Hawk Drive sidewalk $75,000.00 and support for the Wolfville School playground $32,000.00.

It was further noted by Chief Administrative Officer Roy Brideau that there will be no water, sewer or other user fee increases for residents in the coming year.
